As the president and founder of Vermillion Systems, David Vermillion certainly has a wide scope of responsibility. In this installment of “Get to Know Our Team”, we sit down and talk to David about a variety of topics, including the state of the security and surveillance industry, the history of Vermillion Systems, and more. He is a man of many talents, as you will see below in his interview.
How did you get started in the industry?
I graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology but realized that this wasn’t what I was passionate about. I wanted to work with people and solve problems so that is what I did. I started a business right out of the trunk of my car. I would spend a couple days a week knocking on doors and the rest of the time ordering equipment, installing systems and learning how to do it better the next time. By recognizing the value of video surveillance in helping to reduce theft and other criminal activity, I was excited to help implement these solutions for customers. As we continued to grow, we naturally began to venture in other electronic security solutions including alarm and access control systems and eventually became experts in many low voltage electronic systems.
What does your average day look like?
I really try my best to make every day a chance to grow. I am actively involved in the high level operational aspects of the business, so I will offer insight and strategic planning for large projects, challenges and work to strengthen our relationships with customers and vendors. We are always looking to grow so I also regularly seek out opportunities to learn new technology, build relationships, explore acquisition and partnership opportunities.
What do you see the future holding for Vermillion?
I am excited for our future as an organization as we continue to grow our team. We have continuously grown year after year by adding to our outstanding team of individuals. We have high expectations and finding the right people who share the vision, passion and work ethic is challenging but also very rewarding. In terms of the industry, the growth is there too. As new technology emerges and improves, we find new ways to deliver solutions that truly solve problems. I’m truly excited to see how much we grow going forward.
What do you like to do for fun?
Spending time with my wife and our four teenage daughters is what I look forward to most. I enjoy working out, playing volleyball, biking and traveling every chance I get. We enjoy catching up with friends and meeting new people so we like to try new restaurants but we tend to frequent our local favorites a lot too.
